Unlike concrete which provides a stable substrate for epoxy application , wood and plywood  are very flexible and throughout the year expand and contract, therefore standard epoxy and standard epoxy process is not suitable as it will tear, crack, peal and ultimately not last.

       There are multiple approaches to epoxy application over wood flooring.  One very common process is to install self-leveling concrete over the floor and follow with the epoxy application process. This implies sanding , cleaning and  checking all the floor for nails and denivelation, use a fiber tape  on all the seams and hand patch with polymer clay all seams and nail holes. Following the self leveling concrete installation is the Polyurethane epoxy basic steps and finished with design of choice like flake systems or metallics.

      Second approach and the one we stick to doing most of the time, implies first of all cleaning , sanding and patching with polymer clay all holes and seams , followed by a flexible epoxy coating - a rubberized membrane to prevent cracks. And to ensure long lasting flooring we light sand it and only after follow with the polymer epoxy application and desired by client finish. The second option usually requires a bit more time but results are worth it. Some of the cases require combining both option to obtain best result.

      Epoxy cure time is typically 7 days , however it is dry enough to walk on it after 24hrs and sometimes even 12hrs.

How Long will epoxy floor last on wood?

   Polymer epoxy is made out of resin and a hardener (part A and part B ) that makes a bond together and hardens as a plastic or rubber , it can  last 10 to more than 20 years as long as it is properly maintained. Polymer epoxy is very versatile as can be matte, glossy, or something in between .
